I never did meet Edward, my mother’s oldest cousin and one of her best friends. He disappeared over the hostile German skies one cold December night in 1944.

When the telegram arrived, his parents walked back to church, their Irish Catholic roots pulling on them. Sarah’s face expressionless, her tears unshed, she knew not to ask God for a miracle.
